WANTED: GREEN CANDIDATES
At a time when even giant corporations want to be called “green,” authentic Greens can dream of becoming the new majority.
Help us “Reshape '08” by filing as a Green candidate. The deadline for Nebraskans to change party registration to become a 2008 candidate is Dec. 7, 2007. The filing for office deadline is March 3, 2008.
How many elected offices are there in Nebraska?
Federal is easy: two senators, three representatives, total of five.
State is more complicated. Governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, treasurer, auditor, secretary of state and 49 state senators. Plus Public Service Commission (5), State Board of Education (8), University of Nebraska Board of Regents (8). Total of 76.
County is impossible. All 93 counties have boards of commissioners, attorneys, treasurers, assessors, clerks, sheriffs, roads superintendents. But then there are school districts, educational service units, public power districts, natural resource districts, weed boards, airport authorities, etc., some of which cut across county lines. Estimated total of 1,800.
Cities, towns and villages must elect another 1,500 public servants. Grand total of about 3,400, give or take.
And yet Nebraskans have elected only one Green Party member so far — Steve Larrick, Lower Platte South NRD.
Give democracy a chance to choose!
